Poppy seed bagels are hard to find in bagel shops or even your local grocery store. So that makes the perfect opportunity to make fresh homemade poppy seed bagels. This bagel recipe is easy and fun to make. Once you make these bagels you’ll say forget the bagel shops, I’m making my own!
Poppy Seed Bagel Recipe
Step one: Add 1 1/2 cups of flour in a mixing bowl.
Step two: Add 1 1/2 cups of plain greek yogurt to the bowl.
Step three: Add one tablespoon of baking powder to the bowl.
Step Four: Add 3/4 teaspoon of salt. (If you don’t have a 3/4 teaspoon, add three 1/4 teaspoons.)
Step Five: Start mixing the dough together and knead the dough with your hands. If the dough gets too sticky, sprinkle a little flour on your hands. Continue to knead the dough until it comes together in a ball.
Step Six: Sprinkle flour on a clean flat surface, such as a countertop.
Step Seven: Take the dough ball out of the bowl and continue to knead it on the flat surface.
Step Eight: Take dough and roll it in a ball.
Step Nine: Take a knife and cut the dough into four even pieces.
Step Ten: Take one piece of dough and roll it on the flat surface. Roll the dough into a thick rope. Once the dough is in a rope, pinch together the ends to make a circle. Repeat this step for each of the four pieces of dough.
How do you get poppy seeds to stick to bagels?
Egg wash is the best way to get poppy seeds to stick to bagels. After all of your hard work making these bagels, you don’t want the poppy seeds falling off.
Step Eleven: Make your egg wash for the bagels. Crack one egg into a small bowl and add 2 teaspoons of water. Whisk together mixture with a fork or a mini whisk.
Step Twelve: Dip a baking brush into the egg wash and brush the bagels with the mixture. The egg wash will give the bagels a beautiful golden brown color.
Step Thirteen: Sprinkle poppy seeds on the bagels.
Step Fourteen: Transfer the bagels onto a baking sheet or a sprayed pan. I prefer to use baking sheets.
Step Fifteen: Bake the bagels in the oven at 375 degrees for 25 minutes.
This is how the poppy seed bagels look fresh out of the oven.
Add your favorite cream cheese and enjoy!
